On this July 4th American Independence Day, I nominate for American of
the Year: Brian Walker, popularly known as "Rocket Guy".
"Rocket Guy" is Brian Walker, an inventor from Oregon who is building a
rocketship in his yard. It will be launched from a 300-ft cannon to take
him up 30 miles this Summer, "to fufill a childhood dream".
He took a one-week cosmonaut course at the Russian Space Agency, bought
a factory-new $15,000 space suit from them, and built his own centrifuge
in his Rocket Garden facility. (He has also made a working
turbine-powered bicycle, a hovercraft, and a hydrosub, among other
inventions.)

He said he's not using rocket science to build his Earthstar rocketship,
just his own commonsense, experience, and trial-and-error. The audacity
