magnetic launcher that tops out on a mountain top located close to
the equator, and then using lasers to vaporize a few tons of ice at
the end of the launch package to boost it into orbit.
The launcher, which he calls the Bifrost Bridge, is 25 billion
dollars for a $6.25 per Kg to launch. When energy costs from the sea
colonies are included, the cost goes up to $15-20/KG in dollars about
10 years ago. He proposes to use super-conducting capacitors to store
energy for the launching using spin-off from star wars technologies.
The mass launcher would need 50,000 KWh of storage and the laser
array an additional 230,000 KWh.
Unless someone is able to debunk Marshall Savage's work here and now,
I recommend that we build upon his work, unless, of course, someone
else has a better idea.
I heard someone say that Savage seriously miscalculated the G-forces
passengers would experience at the upward curve in the interior of the
mountain, such that the forces in reality would not be survivable. But I
don't think this has caused his group to drop the Bifrost Bridge proposal,
just to redesign it somewhat.
