Are you sure that's true? For American colonization many towns were
founded by groups much larger than a single family that traveled there
together, e.g., Boston, the first Virginia colony, and Salt Lake City.

The materials in one asteroid (the largest ) are sufficient to make
orbital space colonies with ~150 times the surface area of the Earth in
