Why not? It'll be a lot easier to get the Earth from the colony than
the other way around. Furthermore, the colony won't want dissatisfied
people for many reasons. My guess is you won't need the $500.

The materials in one asteroid (the largest ) are sufficient to make
orbital space colonies with ~150 times the surface area of the Earth in
