Well, if there are really going to be countless Habitats, each a
world and government unto themselves, then orbital diplomacy is sure
going to be unpredictable. Alliances, feuds, wars, sanctions, etc.
The game of musical chairs could be interesting in such a multi-
polar world. Of course, I'm assuming that the Habitats are all
pretty equal in size. If you have one Island 3 with 10,000,000
people and 100 Island 1 with 10,000, then you're going to have more
of a hyperpower kind of situation analogous to the role of the US in
today's world.

I find it more than embarassing, I find it dangerous and tragic for
those young people who will forever have to be identified as sexual
predators, have to register with the police where they live, have
their picture put on posters in their neighborhood and on TV and be
hounded, or burned, out of their homes by the ignorant locals.

There but for the luck of the draw go I, for as a 16 year old guy, I
had a 15 year old girlfriend. If I had run into a unlucky
circumstance (meddlesome neighbor, disapproving parent, school
councelor, etc) I would foreverafter be equated with monsters who
prey on little kids.

Any teenager's life can be ruined by, not even a mistake, but a
sexually repressed society coming down hard on normal teenage
activity.

One of the reasons we lived in Europe for a while was to give our
kids a different perspective on how life can be lived. In this
respect I can completely sympathize with parent who stress religous
family values only to see them undermined by society. We just
happened to be coming from a diametrically opposite perspective.

It looks like a good site, but I'm sad to say I didn't frequent it
until today. I'm just adept with my search phrases when I use
Google. I pretty much zero in on what I'm looking for quickly. This
story is just typical of many tragedies out there just like it.

One of the things that I find fascinating about Habitats is the
ability to create new cultures that sheer inertia prevents from
occuring here on Earth.

Have you ever the joke - Heaven is where the police are British, the
cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian
and it is all organised by the Swiss. Hell is where the police are
German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers
are Swiss, and it is all organised by the Italians.

I wonder what a new High Frontier society would be like if we could
*engineer* societal mores and characteristics based on *best
practices* from Earth into a derivative culture. What should those
be?
