I tend to assume that by the time we're ready for interstellar travel, we'll
be able to build small, artificial suns. I don't anticipate we'll be ready
for such journeys until well into the 22nd Century; plenty of time to work
out the engineering details.

But as for the outer reaches of our solar system, O'Neill calculated that
the "1000 mirrors" approach would actually work quite well.
