Keep your hopes up, but I recommend leaving gravity wells alone and
concentrating on space.

To assume the moon is safer than asteroids is a big mistake.

Asteroids are far far safer than the moon:

-- Because asteroids are near-zero grav, rocks don't bend as much
towards you as they move through space, so there's fewer disasters.
-- The moon has no atmosphere to burn up even the smallest rocks, so
the likelyhood of disaster is even greater
-- You are capable of being more mobile in space.. to move out of
the way of things heading your way
-- With asteroid materials you can make better radiation shields
than can ever possibly be made on the moon
-- the moon is extremely low in both volatiles and metals making
mere survival there a big gamble in itself
