New Hard Sci-Fi story

I read it, and mentioned such in
Good work. I wish there were a HSF anthology TV series, like
_Twilight Zone_, only, you know, HSF.

Perhaps the suggestion of space-faring aliens carries, to their
nostrils at least, the taint of UFOlogy. I would hope that it is not
timidity that keeps SETI out of the High Fronteir. I have to wonder:
how much would the search in this story cost?

If we get a signal, one of the first things we will be able to
determine is whether or not it is coming from a planetary surface or
not. Especially if there are several signals coming from various
parts of the system.
