that at least the first conquistadores gained wealth very quickly once
they began to explore the New World. The point I was trying to make
was that unless a source of wealth is discovered that can simply be
boxed up and shipped home, returns on an investment that involves
exploration and colonization usually take a very long time to realize.
I return to my question: How long did it take the flow of manufactured
goods to the East to exceed the flow of capital to the West?
