It's a legitimate question, and I certainly take your point that the
time to payback in that particular case was far beyond the horizon of
most modern corporations. But I repeat my earlier point: European
investors could see a POTENTIAL for payback from the very beginning of
the process. And yes, many such investors lost their shirts because
payback was so long in coming. But the point is that with Mars, we
can't see anything with such potential for payback. Some of us don't
expect any serious effort to develop Mars to even get started in the
absence of such an expectation.
