Radiation shielding

What's Damron? Google turns up nothing on it but people with that
as their last name. How can it be so effective? I didn't think
chemical structure could be so important to high-energy radiation as
to make two inches of plastic as effective as several feet of rock.
Or does this plastic contain a lot of some heavy element?
