"I remember reading somewhere a story about an imam preaching on a street corner somewhere in the Middle East, and telling the gathered that they could ignore the silly rumors about the Americans having walked on the moon. Allah would never have allowed such a desecration.

"The imam expressed the opinion that people spreading such lies should be stoned.

I was about to post something similar yesterday but didn't. In the 1960s there were many who said that Allah would never allow anyone to desecrate the Moon (for connection between moon and Allah there are many sources). There were fatwas issued against anyone pursuing such an action. It doesn't seem any iman of signifcance made such a pronouncement. Then again, I wouldn't recall. At the time, Middle Eastern politics and rhetoric lacked influence anywhere outside of the Middle East.

I wonder, if the Apollo program were only started today, would it be affected by such comments?
