I think that when you say "space station" you are thinking of an
Enterprise-like object, whereas I would say that most people here are
thinking of an Earth-like O 'Neilian habitat. In an O'Neil cylinder,
or even a small Island One, people would live in houses like they do
on Earth, and all house construction techniques (and house
modification techniques) would be the same. There would be only one
radiation shield and it would be meters below the ground.

Nonsense. During colonization of Polynesia, newly colonized islands
had much smaller populations and there are no reports of such "genetic
problems". Also, people in a space colony would not be sealed from the
rest of the universe: there would be a continuing inflow of immigrants
from other colonies as well as and outflow of people moving to other
places.
