Hi,

Yes, the space settlers not only will have resources to mantain a
trillion people, but also will have the most modern genetic
engineering and technology.

Imagine the first major settlements of the solar system happen 100
years from now.

Now, those people not only will have all the technology needed to
convert asteroidal row materials and sun light in all the goods
required for them to survive, including food, machinery and real
state at will. They will have the highest tech available at those
times.

Besides, in genetics, they very likely will reproduce by ARTIFICIAL
means. I bet they will be using artificial wombs and will have the
more advanced genetic engineering and screening available.

Even more, they will carry ALL the genetic pool of the world stored
in the form of frozen eggs and sperms; or perhaps just stored in
magnetic memories. And it is even possible that by then they could
produce even more diversity than the current one by creating
artificial genes.

When they decide to have kids, they will pick they own genes, add or
rest some more from the genetic bank, put the embrio in an
artificial womb and wait nine months. Theirs kids will be produced
with the "highest standards of quality", to say the least.

Even more, perhaps natural reproduction in the way we are
accustumed, will be something very strange 100 years from now.
Individuals likely will be infertile, and will reproduce (by
artificial means) when they decide it is right to do; not forced by
nature, probabilities or irresponsabilities.

So, the idea those settlers will be affected easily by MALTUSIAN
laws seems quite out of place. They will be MORE civilized than us
and not less. The idea of a catastrophic future in space perhaps
could sale a lot of books of Cyberpunk, but is not realistic.

Settler will live a lot more civilized than us. They will be even
better prepared than us to survive, because they won't need Earth to
do so.
