i believe Ive read where it takes about 1000 square feet of plant for
each person. this provides both the o2 and vegetables. if you want
meat, then you need to provide the cows, hogs, or other animals with
sufficient surface to eat and to create their o2. fish and water
based meat producers would be able to use the recycled water in a
stage a little sooner than it would be able to drink. considering
that the ppl would require 10000 cubic feet minimum and more would be
better, while the animals could be in smaller areas, there would be a
large amount of space taken up but the plants. most station designs
have the farm levels on different levels, plus other, non food plants
in the living areas as decoration/soothing sights/recreation areas.
most of the designs have some large yards and parks. the reason for
this is so that (1) the amount of plants needed for food would not
suffice for o2 generation. and (2) the food making plants would be
cyclic. they would be planted each year, grow, be harvested and die
with in months. this would cause some fluctuations, even with
staggered plantings. trees and grasses would even out those
fluctuations.
