What about a lower level of gravity? Say half G or 1/3 G. That way
long distance travel would still be possible. The advantages of lower
G living could be realized, while the problems could be minimized or
eliminated. Also, ultimately all lifestyles could well be a dead end.
If a colony found a good comet to mine, they might create a
civilization that lasts 10,000 years before dying out. Once common
people begin migrating to space, many aren't really going to care
what happens hundreds of years down the road. As long as it can be
done short-term, somebody will do it, and let someone else consider
the consequences.
