Joseph Kittinger: The First Man In Space?

Guess that depends on how you define "space." Kittinger went up to 30
Km. "Space" is generally considered to be 100 Km or more. No
spacecraft that I am aware of orbits at 30 Km. The Ansari X Prize
defined "space" as 62 miles high, which is about the same as 100 Km.
This definition seems to be the standard. Why the people behind this
Discovery program have decided that this less-than-one-third altitude
can be "space" is beyond me, unless it's to keep the danged Commies
from getting the credit.
