I had the great pleasure of reading a wonderful novel by Mark R. Whittington entitled "Children of Apollo" . What follows is the book description from the back cover of the paper back edition.

"The Children of Apollo tells the Story of a Space age that never was, but, should of been. It is a story of high adventure and low intrigue. The Apollo program, which president Kennedy began in 1961is continued with a vengeance by president Nixon, to force the Soviet Union into a space race it cannot win and cannot afford. The story reaches a horrific climax on the Lunar South Pole, with the fate of two astronauts and the world hanging in the balance."

This book is a fascinating alternate history of the space age that could have been. Think of it as a milkshake containing every single flavor you ever loved rolled up into one nice mix. Because in this novel practically every mission you ever wished flew is mentioned here.
