Yeah, quite a while back I decided that it would be far too dogmatic to
try and argue that /nobody/ will ever choose to live on the moon or
Mars, and instead I simply settle for making the point that those who
choose to live in orbit will enjoy significant economic advantages over
those who choose the planet-bound life. I've even argued in articles
that High Frontier type infrastructure in HEO (not necessarily large,
Earthlike habitats, but just a permanent workforce making productive use
of space resources) can be used in support of a large-scale Mars
settlement program. Not because I expect there to be any compelling
economic opportunities on Mars, but because some minority of people will
go to Mars simply because nothing else would float their boat.
