True, which is why all of the peer-reviewed space habitat designs have
strategies for ensuring that there's no straight-line path for cosmic
rays past the slag shields. In advocating that we stick with the
original notion of natural sunlight coming in through glass windows, I
certainly wasn't arguing that we do without shielding.
Another point: 2 meters of slag shielding would be enough to reduce
radiation to levels found in many Earth-bound communities. 5 meters
would be a bit of overkill.
