Greetings and Salutations to the List;
how large they may get. I have talked about a cluster of habs arranged into
a cube (or some other shape, thanks to Lucio for the soccer ball shape
soccer here in Australia and a few others like the USA, football to the rest
of the world, okay, **football** it is, alright?) with the habs held into
the frame and perhaps a a non-rotating sphere (or again some other shape)
that could be used to hold manufacturing facilities. Now I had been thinking
about this idea for some time when I came across a piece in Analog, it was
about the science behind the story. I think I would be in breach of
copyright if I posted the entire article or even just a large part of it so
here is the link so you can look for yourself.

The idea is an intriguing one, a habitat thousands of kilometres wide with
hundreds of smaller (down to house sized) structures in it that spin to
provide custom spin-grav to the inhabitants or not if you are in need of
micro-g. While sounds like a great way of having a lot of habitats in one
area and a way of building simple habitats, no need to worry about
shielding, air is provided, do not need to keep it air-tight and you could
travel from hab to hab in an open cab, fan propelled craft or if you were up
to it, by strapping on a pair of wings and flying from one to the other.
On the down side, you share a common air supply, pollution belongs to
everyone, the spin would need to be maintained because of drag (although you
could do this easy, have two cylinders, joined at the base and use an
electric motor to turn one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise) and
you would have to worry about floating habitats bumping into each other. All
things that could be overcome.
Comments anybody?
