I want to chime in on this one too...
I think the explanation of why we should do all this is pretty
simple... If we don't we die... It's inevitable.. Not because of over
population or dwindling resources.. Not even because of wars or
nuclear threats.. But because it's only by chance that we have
survived this long.. The universe is not an orderly place.. Things
happen.. BIG HUGE things... Things that wipe out life and the
potential for life all the time.. (i.e. black holes, super novas,
gamma burst, evolving stars, colliding planets, asteroids, comets,
ect, ect, ect) It's in the nature of all living things to survive and
propagate in any way possible.. Space colonization is the only way to
achieve this for us.. At least that way we don't have all our eggs in
one basket(so to speak).. I think if we don't do this not only are we
dooming ourselves to the whims of the universe, but it would be
against the very root of our existence....
