Aliens need a lot motime to find us

One can assume some technical civilizations which advance more rapidly
than average, and others that advance less rapidly. That's the
distribution curve Joe keeps talking about. I don't think that changes
the essential features of the argument. In fact, I think part of the
argument is that one of those rapidly advancing civilizations at the
speedy end of the distribution can settle the entire galaxy before those
in the other parts of the curve can even get started.

We can always talk about a civilization which brings its technical
advance to a halt before it's in a position to colonize space. But as I
said before, I think that means a civilization which is extinct with the
next planetary upheaval. And we're not talking about long-dead
civilizations, but current ones.

The one thing we can depend on is that natural selection will invariably
create living systems committed to their own proliferation and spread.
We can't cite a single contrary example on Earth.
