Chris, you are right about the gyro with axis
perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. However,
the gyro with it's axis parallel to the ecliptic would
not stay pointed at the earth (or sun, or whatever it
is orbiting). The orientation of the gyroscopic axis
is relative to the entire universe (in practical
terms, the background stars), not relative to whatever
it is orbiting.
